In a four Apple review, Mac Home Journal says: "...if you like fast paced arcade action, you're going to want this." During a port through the looking glass, the mirror shatters and your ethereal energy (you know, the stuff that allows you to get up and go to work on a Monday morning...) is trapped within one of the crystal shards. Immediately, the residents of the mushroom patch sense your presence. Lead by the Pentipede, this motley crew of mushroom patch misfits relentlessly hunt the crystal ( You! ), intent upon sucking out the trapped energy. The Pentipede is a sinister creature that has the ability to divide. So, if you think your troubles are over when you shoot this sneakered psycho once, you are twice as wrong. The Pentipede is joined by a ruthless assortment of animated killers, and your situation is further complicated by a few unpleasant "environmental" hazards. Luckily you are not defenseless; with plasma cannon blazing, you must hold out as long as possible. Shooting certain mushrooms can be very beneficial to your mission. Several power up coins are scattered throughout the garden. Find one of these and you can teach the Pentipede and his pals the meaning of "full auto." Inside Mac Games sums it up by saying "Apeiron's astounding graphics and sound coupled with its captivating gameplay make it a joy to play and a worthy successor to a classic such as Maelstrom." The following is a list of the bugs that were fixed in Apeiron 1.0.2: -- Finally fixed the nasty sprinkly shield bug (happened only when you were attacking 'pedes that were poisoned, en-mass) -- Fixed an odd bug with Mode32 and some other configurations that cause the 'pedes to misbehave -- Fixed a bug that caused Apeiron to not work properly on the newer PowerMacs running System 7.5.2 -- Updated the contact information -- Included the "Apeiron FAQ" and "Ambrosia FAQ" with Apeiron -- Added a "Paused" graphic when the game is paused with the Caps Lock key -- Included the new Ambrosia registration system #### BINHEX avalon-2029.hqx **** From: billc@CS.Stanford.EDU Subject: Avalon 2029 Avalon 2029: Avalon 2029 is a one player, shoot-em-up style action game. It exhibits a precarious balance between action and strategy; thinking and reflex. The feeling you get from playing Barrack is an eccentric harmony between the automatic, mind-numbing pleasure of Tetris and the kind of action found in Maelstrom. The result is that you'll be left with sweat on your brow. Barrack's goal is deceptively simple; there are a number of balls on the play field that are bouncing like a neurotic on a sugar rush. Your job is to use your shooter to isolate them. Sounds easy, right? It isn't. First of all, if a ball breaks your shooter's particle beam before it tears through the play field, your shooter overloads and explodes in a cascade of fire and scrap metal. The second problem is that these aren't any ordinary balls. They have more personalities than Sybil, and none of them are particularly friendly. We'll leave the particulars up to your imagination for now, but suffice it to say that these aren't the kind of balls you get from bubble gum machines. Oh, did we forget to mention the land shark? Bosco is a rare breed of shark capable of rearranging his molecular structure at will. This enables him to travel at quite a clip through otherwise solid substances. If you don't pay attention while he closes in on your shooter, you may end up being fish-bait. He's tenacious, voracious, and about every other -acious you can think of, all rolled into one lean, mean, shooter-munchin' machine. Barrack features stunning artwork, intense action, vibrant 8-channel stereo sound effects, and the addictiveness that comes standard in an Ambrosia game. Different shaped pieces will fall from the top of the window, and you have to move and rotate them to get them to fit into the pile at the bottom. Whenever you complete a row of bricks, that row will disappear and the other bricks will fall down a level. The aim of the game is to get as many points as you can before the pile of bricks reaches the top. What might not be so familiar is the huge number of options. You choose how many bricks there are per piece, how many pieces fit in the window, what you get score for, the speed of the game and whether it speeds up. You can configure your own sets of gameplay and scoring options and have a high score list for each one. You also have a lot of control over how the game looks, such as the colours, textures, size and even shape of the blocks. Of course you can also choose which keys you use to control the pieces. Legend has it that Brettrix was created by the world's only kiwiloon (a cross between a kiwi and a Canadian loon) as a fiendish trap for the giant meddling featherless beakless flightless noisy walking targetbirds who stole the attention of his beloved Claire, an albino pigeon. Even the number of paddles in the game can be changed. Brickles3000 is suitable for everyone from the very youngest children learning to use a mouse, to fast-paced arcade fans. The new Brickles3000, aside from being optimized for the PowerPC, also features much smoother animation than in days past. A new toolbar allows for rapid personalized game customizations, making it a snap to adjust speed, ball and paddle sizes, game colors and window sizes and shapes. Brickles3000 v2.0.5 reduces processor requirements when the Brickles window is not active, updates contact info and help text, and other minor changes. Brickles3000 requires a PPC Macintosh with a screen resolution of 800x600 (or more), and OS 9 (with CarbonLib 1.6 or greater) or OS X. Brickles3000 is available now for a free trial. Ooops! Ooops! A quick, embarrassing bug fix release. Occasionally, a valid high score would not be accepted by the Brickles Pro Online Hall of Fame web page. That is now fixed. Merrimack, New Hampshire, July 8, 2004: Ken Winograd and Space-Time Associates are very excited to announce today the release of Brickles Pro, the Classic Ball and Paddle Game for Macintosh (the successor to Brickles3000.) Brickles Pro is not a typical ball and paddle game. Brickles Pro features adjustable colors and patterns, adjustable ball and paddle sizes, stereo sounds, adjustable speed and window sizes, and more. Even the number of paddles in the game can be changed. Brickles Pro is suitable for everyone from the very youngest children first learning to use a mouse, to fast-paced arcade fans, from grandparents to grandchildren. With the new experimental speed control, Brickles Pro can even be set to play at super-slow speeds, allowing its use by those just recovering from strokes. This same new experimental speed control also allows speed freaks to get every last ounce of power when used with the new, faster Macs. Brickles Pro allows the user to chose from among various built-in Brickle array designs. Brickles Pro will then use the chosen design for every level of the game, if desired. A random mode may also be chosen to allow each level of the game to use a randomly selected Brickle design array. Brickles Pro thus includes many Brickles games in one. Brickles Pro now supports the new Brickles Pro Online Hall of Fame web page. Every time you get a new high score, you can send that high score to the Online Brickles Pro Hall of Fame web page. Compare your score to the scores of your friends, schoolmates, family members, and others from around the world. Everyone is a winner. There are various Scoreboards associated with each of the many possible Brickles Pro configurations. Brickles Pro requires any PowerPC Macintosh running OS9 or OSX. (A version of Brickles for Windows is also available.) Brickles Pro is available now for a free trial. The game was also available for the C64, Atari ST, and Amiga, but never for the Macintosh. Bub & Bob is a 90% clone of the classic game, designed and programmed to run on the Mac. Bub & Bob can be played alone or together with another human player. You are a little green or blue dinosaur with the ability to blow bubbles out your mouth. Your aim is to catch the deadly balls in level 100. So you have to play through all the 99 levels to get there. Some levels are much easier to play if you play in the two player mode. That's it... come here... just a little more... SQUISH!! Haha! Eat seaweed fish-breath!" -- Blinky the teenage mutant goldfish. Welcome to Bubble Trouble folks, the latest game from Ambrosia in which cutthroat fishies are playing hardball in a squabble over some very wet turf. Think of it as splatball for insufferably cute seafaring critters (hey, they need their fun too). Bubble Trouble's world is filled with lusciously-drawn cartoony critters who give that cranky crab from "The Little Mermaid" a run for his money. But money isn't what you'll be running from: an otherwise peaceful fish bowl has been filled with bubbles that are being tossed around in an enthralling game of "Squish the Fish!" Yes, it's squish or be squished -- and there are plenty of would-be squishers just waiting for you to get your feet wet: Piranha and starfish and eels, oh my! But don't worry little fishy, there are plenty of power-ups and goodies you can hook your fin onto to give you a bit of an edge. Bubble Trouble is sure to extort squeals of delight from children of all ages, accented by the game's engaging sound effects and disturbingly perky music. But when the clock strikes midnight, remember: "Just one more game." Bubble Trouble is the proud offspring of two guys with funny accents (David Wareing and Alex Metcalf). Your task is to use your trusty FireHawk 6000 spaceship to blast through the enemy's defenses and blow the base to smithereens. Cyclone has received excellent reviews (four out of five mousesticks from Inside Mac Games) and has gained widespread popularity. Cyclone II adds a bunch of cool new stuff to the original. More powerups to aid your noble quest for destruction. A new bonus level to challenge your skills and savvy. Three difficulty levels (Boring, Fun and Frustrating) to make your life easier or more exciting. Full color background starfield pictures to soothe the senses. Four channels of digital sound. Power Macintosh native code. And a volume control that goes to eleven, giving you that extra edge when you need it most. Cyclone II requires a Macintosh system capable of displaying 256 colors. It runs well on any 68K Mac, from the original Mac II to the latest Performa, and is accelerated for Power Macintosh. Cyclone II is a commercial-quality product, offered as $14.95 shareware. The game places you as a Sergeant commanding a team of Marines in a real-time 3D environment, wherein you try to issue them orders while keeping yourself alive. Though experienced players of other 3D games (such as a wee game known as Marathon, from which this game derives its "engine") may be able to blow through some of the early levels without the help of their team, the levels get hard enough later on that most will be doomed without strategically using their squad. You may distribute this Demonstration Version of Damage Incorporated freely using whatever means (electronic, via magnetic or optical media, or through whatever means you desire) and to whomever you see fit, as long as it is left unaltered and this "Read This" file is included with it. This demo features four levels, three single player and one network, from the final game. The first two single player levels are the actual first two from the full game, and as such aren't too hard. The third, however, is from near the end of the game, and as such is rather difficult. Though the Shocktroopers have been toned down for this Demo somewhat, don't be embarrassed if you get your butt handed to you on this third level quite a bit. The demo version only includes 8 bit sound and graphics, limits network games to five-minute two-player combat, offers you only 4 marines to take with you on your missions, and drastically reduces squad-member conversation. #### BINHEX dark-corona-pegasus-105.hqx **** From: christen@algomedia.com Subject: Dark Corona PEGASUS 1.0.5 Name: Dark Corona PEGASUS Version: 1.0.5 - January 26th, 1998 by: Martin Christen, Algomedia Software License: Shareware, $17 homepage: http://www.algomedia.com contact: support@algomedia.com Dark Corona PEGASUS is a scrolling action arcade game. Diamonds 3D requires a mouse or similar pointing device. Diamonds 3D requires 2300K of memory (3000K is required to use background music). Diamonds 3D should perform acceptably (60 frames/second animation) on any Quadra or Centris system, any Power Macintosh, and on many other systems, including Performa models in the 5xx, 6xx, 5xxx, and 6xxx series. Diamonds 3D may run slowly (but otherwise correctly) on older Macintosh hardware. Diamonds 3D is accelerated for Power Macintosh. For best results, quit all other applications before playing Diamonds 3D. Services and utilities such as File Sharing, Control Strip, PrintMonitor, Remote Access, MacPPP, and other background tasks may perform poorly while Diamonds 3D is running, or may cause Diamonds 3D to perform poorly. Do not play Diamonds 3D on a Macintosh PowerBook computer running only from battery power. Diamonds 3D may interfere with proper system sleep behavior when the battery runs out. How to play Diamonds 3D After Diamonds 3D has loaded, start playing by clicking on the "NEW" button, or by choosing "New" from the Game menu, or by typing Command-N. Move the paddle over the ball and click once to launch the ball into play. You can hold the ball on the paddle briefly by holding down the mouse button. To end a game during play, type Command-W. To quit the game at any time, type Command-Q, or if no game is in progress, click on the "QUIT" button or choose "Quit" from the Game menu. If the ball gets stuck, hold down the mouse button, and move the paddle in the direction you want the ball to go. The ball will be gently attracted to the paddle while you hold the button down. You may be able to figure out what to do while playing just by experimenting. Or, you can read this paragraph for some quick instructions. To complete each level you must clear all of the Diamond bricks. In level one, there are no other bricks to worry about. After level one, you must clear all of the Color bricks before you can clear any Diamond bricks. After level two, you must have the correct ball color in order to clear the color bricks. Hit the Color Energizer brick to change the color of the ball, then clear the matching Color bricks. The full version of Diamonds 3D contains 50 levels. Many surprises beyond just Color Energizers await as you explore these increasingly challenging levels. And, a secret surprise awaits those who reach level 50. Before playing, you'll need to read the DOOM manual and this addendum which contains information for playing in Multiplayer mode, as well as technical support and troubleshooting instructions. To avoid compatibility errors, please make sure that your machine and network conform to the system requirements listed below. DOOM requires a Macintosh or Macintosh compatible computer with a minimum of a 68040, 68LC040 or PowerPC processor with 8 megabytes of RAM (4500K of free RAM is required), and 6 MB of free hard disk space. A monitor that supports 256 colors/grays with a minimum resolution of 640 x 400 pixels is required. System 7.1 or later is required. An AppleTalk® network, either LocalTalk® or Ethernet, is required for network play between Macintosh computers, and a network that uses the IPX/MacIPX protocol is required for network gameplay between Macintosh and PC-compatible computers. A modem that can be set to at least 9600 baud is required for modem gameplay. DOOM also requires that you have Sound Manager version 3.0 or later installed. Sound Manager 3.0 is available from a variety of on-line services, from Apple Computer, and is built into System 7.5 or later. Note that Sound Manager 3.0 is not a "native" PowerPC extension, and will thus slow the execution speed of your PowerPC-based Macintosh. For best results, upgrade to Sound Manager 3.1 as soon as it becomes available from Apple Computer, Inc. For music while playing DOOM, you will need to have QuickTime 2.0 or later installed. It is available via some on-line services such as Compuserve. QuickTime 2.0 is included with the retail version of Ultimate DOOM or DOOM II, as is Sound Manager 3.0. The MacIPX extension is included with the Ultimate DOOM or DOOM II for the Macintosh, and will allow you to play DOOM between Macintosh and PC computers over an IPX network, such as Novell NetWare. To play DOOM via a modem, you will need to install a modem tool that is compatible with Apple's Communication Toolbox. Most modems include a Comm Toolbox tool, such as "Apple Modem Tool". Follow the instructions in your modem's manual on how to establish a connection. #### BINHEX dr-max-10.hqx **** From: slc@pacbell.net Subject: Dr. Max 1.0 Extra! Extra! It's in the spirit of Tetris and Columns, but is NOT just a clone of either of those games. It's a totally unique and original game in which you place 4-color (or 4-pattern, on B&W monitors) tiles on a grid and try to match colors with already-placed tiles. Very simple to learn, but fun and challenging to play. Requires both quick thinking and quick reflexes. This is version 2.0 of FloorTiles; a much-enhanced update to the original FloorTiles, which has earned a great deal of critical acclaim (see below). FloorTiles is actually 3 distinct games in one package. The 3 games are similar in some respects, but each requires a different strategic approach. Furthermore, each game can be played on either the full-sized "Big Board" , or a smaller, quicker "Small Board", and each game can be played in an arcade "Timer" mode or a leisurely "No-Timer" mode. Thus, there are a total of twelve variations (3x2x2) available in this one small program. Instructions are included in the game, under the "Guide" and Apple menus. This is version 2.0.1 of FloorTiles. This version introduces preference-saving and registration via the Kagi shareware system. Note: FloorTiles 2.0 is a shareware re-release of my commercial game "Macao", formerly published by Axis Software. FloorTiles runs in color on 256 color or better systems, and in glorious B&W otherwise. Requires System 7.0 or later, 750K free RAM, any size monitor.
